Movie Review: The first reason why you'd like to rush to the nearest cinema to watch this one? Battleship releases a month before the United States of America. Nah! You'd rush to see your ultimate Hasbro combat game come alive on screen. But before that, here's a warning: Some fifty odd minutes into the movie and this is what you witness - Lt. Alex Hopper ( Taylor Kitsch) is a happy-go-lucky-youth who does not mind rubbing the cops on the wrong side just to get a chicken hamburger for his girl, Samantha (Brooklyn Decker). Enough to win over his lady love, but not much to convince her dad, Admiral Shane ( Liam Neeson). For him, it's about winning bigger battles. Just when the naval fleet at Pearl Harbor, under the command of apna 'Carter' Kitsch, engages in a deadly battle against the foes from outer space who are here to rob Earth of its power resources. That's where you see Kitsch play hero in every sense of the word as he prepares, strategises and leads his troops to victory. Now, if you can last this bit of screen time, rest assured, the fun just begins.
Yes, Battleship does have enough battles for all gaming buffs out there. There is endless non-stop action, unlimited explosions, adrenaline pumping moments, balls of fire, weird looking creatures, edge-of-the-seat and do-or-die moments. There are also plasma screens spotting the super fast coming of the aliens from under water, NY roads cracking up, cars being destroyed, Hong Kong skyscrapers turning into dust, helicopters being blasted, bright blue signals in the dark pacific ocean. In simple words, this one's PS3 on the big screen. Add to that the use of several real Navy ships and Navy war skills and you don't really complain about yet another been-there-seen-that battle for Planet Earth from Hollywood.
Of course, for the just-not-unfaithful fans, here's one more reason to watch this one. Pop icon Rihanna makes her debut as the confident Petty Officer Raikes, who makes you almost jump from the seat with her first (and sadly last) blow to the alien on the hunt. Now she might not have her oohs and aahs in place here - she's a tomboy in uniform - but then you do end up saying please don't stop the music (read raw action on screen), Rihanna!

Story

A BAG OF HAMMERS rotates around the friendship of 2 charming grifters, Ben and Alan, played by Jason Ritter and Jake Sandvig. Because of their less-than-ideal childhoods and a "job" that permits them to stay likeable boyish rogues well into their 20's, their penchant for crime is nearly forgivable. Yet, everything changes when they meet up a twelve-year-old boy named Kelsey. Ignored by his mother, Kelsey is drawn to Ben and Alan and they to him--eventually, Kelsey become part mascot, part protégé. His presence ultimately forces Alan and Ben to decide between a life of crime and fun (an extended childhood) and the opportunity to grow up and deal with the emotional consequences that come with it.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his grave and comes out into the very changed world of 1972. Yash Raj Films' (YRF) Ishaqzaade, which also marks the debut of filmmaker Boney Kapoor's son Arjun will release May 11, tells the story of two fiery characters and their fight for power and supremacy.
On the other hand, Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka starrer Teri Meri Kahaani is being described as "a timeless love story". The film is set between: 1910 to 2012. Directed by Kunal Kohli, it is expected to release in June.

'Ishaqzaade' release advanced to May 11
The release date of Ishaqzaade, starring Parineeti Chopra and newcomer Arjun Kapoor, has been advanced from May 18 to May 11, resulting in a clash with Dangerous Ishq.
The decision to release the romance drama a week earlier came in after much thought by production company Yash Raj Films (YRF).
"With Ferrari ki Sawaari moving to a later date and the IPL (Indian Premier League) crunch matches starting from May 18, this shift will give Ishaqzaade a better window for release," said a statement from YRF.
The movie tells the story of two fiery characters and their fight for power and supremacy.
Written and directed by Habib Faisal of Do Dooni Chaar fame, the film narrates how two people who are born to hate, and destined to love, come face-to-face with each other.

Arjun Kapoor has a collection of 7500 DVDs
The actor is a huge movie buff and is known to be watching one film a day.
Boney Kapoor's son and Sonam Kapoor's cousin Arjun Kapoor, is all set to make his debut with YRF's Ishaqzaade this May. The handsome hunk that you see in the film's trailer wasn't always like this. A few years back, Arjun Kapoor was a roly-poly boy weighing 140 kgs. Of course the boy worked extra hard to look how he does today. But perhaps this could be the reason why Arjun Kapoor was a couch potato.
Apparently Arjun is a big movie buff (a step above the regular lot) and has a collection of 7500 DVDs at his house. A close friend of Arjun says, "While most people love to party and chill, this Kapoor lad is a little different. He loves watching movies. When you walk into his room, what catches your eye is the huge collection of DVD's that he has. All alphabetically arranged like you see in a library. From romantic films to comedy to actions - he has all of them. Some of them even in foreign languages. He is a huge movie buff and from years has been watching one film a day."

Wei Te-Sheng's epic film WARRIORS OF THE RAINBOW: SEEDIQ BALE retrieves an extraordinary episode from 20th-century history which is little-known even in Taiwan. Between 1895 and 1945, the island was a Japanese colony inhabited not just by the majority (Han Chinese immigrants) but also by the remnants of the aboriginal tribes who initial settled the mountainous land. In the year 1930 Mouna Rudo, the head of one of the Seediq tribes settled on and around Mount Chilai, forged a coalition with other Seediq tribal leaders and planned an uprising against their Japanese colonial masters. It was to start at a sports day meeting where the assembled tribesmen were to attack and kill the Japanese officials and would then widen to sieges on police stations and local government offices in the region. The first rising took the Japanese by surprise and was nearly wholly victorious. But the Japanese soon sent in their army to defeat the rebellion, using aircraft and poison gas.
Mouna Rudo knew from the beginning that the comparatively small force of Seediq tribesmen stood no possibility of conquering the might of Japan. But he and his allies were sustained by the beliefs and myths which had nourished their tribes since time immemorial. Young males in the tribes had to undergo a rite de passage to become adult men, which gave them the right to have their faces tattooed. In the tribal language, they became Seediq Bale – heroes of the tribe. Their belief was that their ancestors would lead the spirits of the Seediq Bale across a rainbow bridge to the peak of the mountain when their time came. And thus, whatever the result of their rising against Japan, they would march in success across the rainbow bridge… The heroism and fortitude of the Seediq warriors and their womenfolk surprised even the Japanese and won them enduring respect.

Historical Background
The 1895 Treaty of Shimonoseki ceded the island of Taiwan (aka Formosa) to Japan. There was instant tension between the islanders and their new colonial masters, sparking several small rebellions, but the brutal suppression of the Taiwanese Revolt in 1916 brought an uneasy peace.
At that era, the aboriginal tribes of Taiwan – deemed 'primitive savages' by the Japanese – were deprived of their lands and their weapons, along with their traditions of head-hunting and face tattooing. The tattooing was an essential part of tribal cultures: in the Seediq tribes, when a young man was given his face-tattoo it signified that he had passed from boyhood to manhood and become a 'hero of the tribe' – a Seediq Bale. Despite all of Japan's constraints on their culture, the aboriginal tribes submitted to Japanese rule for a time. In Wushe, a tribal township on Mount Chilai, the Japanese even set up a school, a post office, a vocational training center … and a branch of the Nenggao Police Ministry.
Mouna Rudo was the leader of the Seediq tribe in Wushe. He had sparked small rebellions against the Japanese in the year 1920 and 1925, but by 1930 seemed resigned to accepting Japan's rule. Thinking that they had 'tamed' the savages, the Japanese reduced the number of policemen stationed in Wushe.
During the 'phoney peace' of 1930, yet, Pihu Sapu and other tribesmen from Hogo village persuaded Mouna Rudo to initiate an ambitious new rebellion. They secretly lobbied other Seediq villages in the region and created an underground alliance of 6 villages: Truwan, Mahebo, Bualon and Suku joined Wushe and Hogo in planning a surprise attack on the Japanese. The alliance mustered above 3 hundred able-bodied fighting men in whole.
The plan was to strike on October 27th, the day of a school sports meeting in Wushe, when the Commissioner for Nenggao and other high-ranking Japanese officials would be in attendance. The tribal army divided into numerous teams to launch surprise attacks on the whole region's police stations; they then converged to surround Wushe and massacre every Japanese in sight. The action was swiftly accomplished: 136 Japanese men and women were killed. There were 428 Chinese-Taiwanese residing in Wushe at the time, and only 2 of them were killed, both by accident. It was a cautiously planned and executed rebellion, nothing like a traditional tribal head-hunting attack.
In the days that followed, the Seediq rebels set fire to their own homes and villages. The Japanese were confounded and overwhelmed. When the police and army squads sent to defeat the rebellion failed, the Japanese authorities tried to bribe the Seediqs to turn against the rebels. But the rebellion continued for 50 days.
It is said that over 100 Seediq women hanged themselves during the rebellion in order to free their husbands from the burden of taking care of them. Defeated in ground combat, the Japanese resorted to dropping poison gas on the rebels from aircraft – in breach of international conventions. The gas bombs caused some rebels to give up and others to commit suicide. Mouna Rudo saw that the rebellion could go no further and instructed his family members to kill themselves. He personally shot his wife and two grandsons and then hide up the mountain, hoping that the Japanese would never locate him. His eldest son Tado Mouna battled to the last bullet and then hanged himself, along with other rebels. The 'Wushe Incident' – as the Japanese dubbed it – lastly ended when one of the ringleaders, Pihu Sapu, was captured. It was a full 50 days after the sports day massacre.
The Japanese soon exacted their revenge. They first mounted 'The Second Wushe Incident': the execution of over 200 captured rebels, designed to prevent any further uprisings. They then moved all surviving Seediq tribes people to an offshore island (they named it Kawanaka-hara-jima) linked to the mainland only by a flimsy suspension bridge. The Seediqs were lastly isolated and contained.

'Dangerous Ishq' not horror film: Vikram Bhatt
Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt says his next project "Dangerous Ishq" is being wrongly perceived as a horror film.
"'Dangerous Ishq' is 3D. Yes. And it's a mystery set in reincarnations. The media is wrongly reporting it as a horror," Bhatt posted on his Twitter page.
"Dangerous Ishq" marks the comeback of actress Karisma Kapoor. It also features Rajniesh Duggal, said to have been finalized as the two male leads in the movie.

Actress Karisma Kapoor, who is making her Bollywood comeback with Vikram Bhatt's 3D venture Dangerous Ishq, says the film is bold in the sense of its subject line.
The supernatural thriller revolves around the quest of supermodel Sanjana (Karisma Kapoor) to save her husband Rohan (Rajneish Duggal) who suddenly vanishes under mysterious circumstances.
"Dangerous Ishq is a bold film in its own way because we are dealing with a topic which doesn't fall under a typical Hindi movie genre. Nowadays, a lot of people are intrigued by the idea of past life regression, tarot card reading etc and it is a bold movie," Karisma told reporters last evening after unveiling the first look of the film.
The 37-year-old portrays a careerist woman who belongs to glamorous world and is madly in love with her husband Rohan Thakral.
"I don't want to know about my past.... I am too scared to know about it. But I do believe in it. I have met friends who had gone for regress and it all true. In this film you will know what all a person will go through regression," she said.
After acting in Baaz: A Bird in Danger in 2003, the actress took a sabbatical from full-time acting for three years post her marriage to industrialist Sanjay Kapur in the same year.
Karisma, however, continued to appear on small screen with television series Karishma: A Miracle of Destiny, and also judging the dance reality show Nach Baliye 4 alongside actor Arjun Rampal and director-choreographer Farah Khan.
As far as big screen appearance is concerned, the actress did a cameo along with numerous Bollywood stars in Shahrukh Khan-starrer Om Shanti Om in 2007.
Karisma, however, does not feel that her full-fledged acting assignment in the supernatural thriller was a comeback. "I don't think it's my comeback, I was on a sabbatical or shall I say a maternity leave," the 37-year-old said.
Asked about how it feels to face cameras after a gap, she replied ,"I am not nervous....it's been 20 years for me in the industry now. But from my first film itself till today, I have never been able to sit in the audience and see myself on screen. It's a secret that I am telling everyone".
Dangerous Ishq which is slated for release on May 11 also stars Jimmy Shergill, Divya Dutta, Sameer Kochar, Gracy Singh and Ruslaan Mumtaz.

Actress Karisma Kapoor, who is making her Bollywood comeback with Vikram Bhatt's 3D venture 'Dangerous Ishq', says the film is 'bold' in the sense of its subject line. The supernatural thriller revolves around the quest of supermodel Sanjana (Karisma Kapoor) to save her husband Rohan (Rajneish Duggal) who suddenly vanishes under mysterious circumstances.

"Dangerous Ishq is a bold film in its own way because we are dealing with a topic which doesn't fall under a typical Hindi movie genre. Nowadays, a lot of people are intrigued by the idea of past life regression, tarot card reading etc and it is a bold movie," said Karisma.

The films also stars Jimmy Shergill, Divya Dutta, Sameer Kochar, Gracy Singh and Ruslaan Mumtaz. Dangerous Ishq will release on May 11.

No issues with Sameera Reddy, says Ratan Jain
Bollywood producer Ratan Jain has shot down reports that actress Sameera Reddy is miffed with him for offering an item number, earlier reserved for her in the film " Tezz", to Mallika Sherawat. He says the news is over-hyped.
"My film is over. I don't know anything about the conflict and don't want to comment about it. I have no issues with Sameera Reddy. It is all created by the media," Jain told IANS.
As per reports, an item song "Laila", which was earlier supposed to be done by Sameera, was ultimately performed by Mallika.
But Jain dismissed this, saying: "It is all created by media. She (Sameera) was never a part of it. Whoever is happy or unhappy with me, I am not answerable for that."
After all the reported drama, he doesn't rule out working with Sameera in future.
"If she is okay to work with me in future, then I will approach her and will work with her again.... if she would have not been happy with us then she would not have come for the promotion of the film in Delhi," added Jain.
Directed by Priyadarshan, "Tezz" features Ajay Devgn, Kangna Ranaut, Anil Kapoor and Boman Irani in key roles.

The Priyadarshan directed Tezz is all set for release, and the cast and crew are city-hopping to promote their masaaledaar venture. There's a slight sensitive tale attached to the very popular song 'Laila'. Although a sizzling Mallika Sherawat grooves to those beats, it's Sameera Reddy who was hoping to perform the item number.
In fact, it is believed that Priyadarshan, too, thought that Sameera would be able to pull it off, but it was producer Ratan jain who thought Mallika Sherawat would add more commercial value and viability to this feat. Thus Sameera was a woman scorned. And wasn't present on the sets in spite of having to make a presence in the song 'Laila'.
This incident has made enemies of even Sameera Reddy and Mallika Sherawat. Anyway, at the press conference, Sameera was asked her opinion about the item number 'Laila'. This was trigger point enough for Sameera and Ratan Jain to get into a battle of words on the public platform. However, it was the mature Ajay Devgn, who plays the lead in the film, to pacify both parties.
Although Ratan Jain confirms that the incident is being blown out of proportion by the media, and that he has no qualms about working with Sameera Reddy in the future, we're pretty sure that it's only a miracle that'll see Sameera featured in aVenus production.

The word Tezz has different connotations. It means speedy and it also implies sharp. While Priyadarshan's action thriller undoubtedly is life in the fast lane, one can't essentially say it's a sharp story. But it isn't blunt either!
Aakash (Ajay Devgn) has set bombs on a train speeding from London to Glasgow. Retired counter-terrorism officer Arjun Khanna (Anil Kapoor) is summoned to investigate the case. As Arjun tries to negotiate with Aakash, he simultaneously attempts to trace his whereabouts.
Unlike the more recent Hollywood train-thrillers like Unstoppable (2010) or The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009), Tezz derives its soul from Keanu Reeves' Speed (1994) and changes the conveyance from road to rail. Like the Keanu Reeves's film, even Tezz employs the basic threat that the bombs on train will go off if the speed falls below a certain limit.
However much against the potential of the plot, most of the action in the film doesn't happen on or around the train. While the focus essentially is on the one-upmanship between Anil Kapoor and Ajay Devgn with the pursuit shifting positions between land and water, one would have loved to see more of rail in the film beyond its external ariel shots. Alas the maximum adventure that one gets to see on the train is an attempt to shift passengers to a parallel locomotive - an idea as old as The Burning Train (1980).
However the major drawback of Tezz is that the motive behind the entire train takeover seems too weak. It's not a terrorist operation but a man's vengeance against a country. A country that deported him for being an illegal immigrant and working without permit! Tezz tries to set its entire train-seize drama on such trivial grounds. With Ajay Devgn being the main lead, the antagonist is still the hero of the film and so he is not defined as a professional criminal but is doing the one-off operation for seeking revenge. Now that's like having one's cake and eating it too. The director wants you to sympathize with the antagonist and yet maintain that his method is wrong. Supporting characters (Zayed Khan, Sameera Reddy) are inducted in the plot with the same conflicts.
The pacing of the film is in absolute accordance with the title and the narrative runs as relentlessly as the locomotive. The past-describing prologue doesn't run beyond 90 seconds and the film comes to point pretty fast with the train hijack starting within the first 10 minutes. With that Robin Bhatt steers away from any surplus in the screenplay but, at the same time, the characters and their conflicts also appear underdeveloped. There are no background accounts of Zayed or Sameera beyond a fleeting flashback scene. And with lines like 'izzat milti nahi, cheen ni padti hain' and 'bhugatna poore kaum ko padta hain', Aditya Dhar's dialogues run in the conventional domain.
Thereby it's left to the action sequences (not involving the train) to keep you riveted and they do so to a good extent. Even the chase scenes are well-shot and don't appear disturbing or distracting like in most action movies. Evidently, the action boils down to a traditional fistfight in the end as per Bollywood prerequisites. However, Priyadarshan adds such dexterity to the drama and pace to proceedings that it, more or less, compensates for the conventionalism in the chronicle.
Despite a sulking pout, Ajay Devgn pulls off his intense character with effortless ease. Anil Kapoor is in his elements and his energy adds life to the proceedings. Boman Irani is efficient as the train traffic-control officer. Zayed Khan and Sameera Reddy are aptly employed with less acting and more action. Mohanlal, as an officer aboard the train, is visible as much (or less) as the train. Kangna Ranaut doesn't get much scope. Mallika Sherawat's sex-appeal as the item girl is stale.
At the end, Tezz is fast enough for you to keep track of its inconsistencies and manages to reach its target.

Verdict: Above Average

As fortune would have it, a small brawl in the colony brings DR CHADDHA and VICKY, face to face, where CHADDHA, concludes that Vicky could be THAT donor he has been searching for. From here on, CHADDHA’S days and nights are spent in convincing Vicky to become a donor till he lastly surrenders. Vicky finds his love interest in ASHIMA ROY, a pretty BENGALI girl, who works in a Bank. But shortly there hunky dory world comes crashing downward because of Vicky's history as a donor.
With a brief emotional roller coaster journey, VICKY DONOR is a light-hearted commences the matter of sperm donation.

Amongst the major accomplishments of this film is the fact that despite being a film revolving around the theme of the sperm donation, Vicky Donor is a 'family entertainer'. 'Entertainer' because neither is it designed as a crude sex-comedy nor does it comes across as a public service message on sperm donation. A 'feel-good family film' because there is no visual or verbal vulgarity despite the forthright and forbidden theme.
Vicky Arora (Ayushmann Khurana) is an aimless and jobless Delhi boy. He is persuaded by Dr Baldev Chaddha (Annu Kapoor), an infertility clinic owner to become a sperm donor that could help childless couples. After much resistance, he finally agrees to the act to earn some easy money. Soon he makes a fortune out of his potent attribute. He also marries the love of his life Ashima (Yaami Gautam) but things take a drastic turn when she comes to know about his covert contributions to the sperm bank.
Vicky Donor comes with a fresh story. Call it a love story on the backdrop of sperm donation or a film about sperm donation with a love story within - the writing by Juhi Chaturvedi seamlessly integrates the two elements to come up with a wholesome entertainer. Further director Shoojit Sircar flawlessly catches the pulse of Delhi and the drama in the narrative.
While the film lightly touches on the theme of the shortage of sperm donors and the social stigma attached to the act (unlike blood or organ donations), it intentionally refrains from being an issue-based cinema. Vicky's initial opposition to the idea aptly brings out the average apprehensions and his consequent consent reveals the monetary motives behind the act.
The love story between the lead pair that starts off on a flirtatious note but soon translates into an amiable affair, brings a sublime smile on your face throughout. The romance is refreshing and the chemistry between the couple is hot-n-happening. Soon the love affair of the cross-cultural couple gets into the 'Two States' zone. The film takes an unapologetic look at the culture characteristics (or call it cliches) of the Punjabi boy and Bengali girl and the divergent divide expressed in the sequence of scenes that lead to their matrimony is absolutely uproarious.
But beyond having a splendid sense of humour, the film also has a very poignant side to it. The fact that Vicky's fervent fertility isn't of any productive use to himself is where the film defines a strong contrasting conflict in the narrative. Since the couple's camaraderie was so sizzling, you feel the pinch as they part ways. Further Sircar successfully defines and distinguishes emotions, elucidating how the point of marital discord between the couple is not merely mistrust but insecurity. The climax comes across as convenient though isn't unconvincing.
The pacing is fast and the multiple-montage crisp editing never lets you lose the narrative. The dialogues vary from the quirky to the well-worded conversations and contribute immensely to the humor quotient. The music is peppy and goes smoothly with the flow of the film.
Vicky Donor is what it is primarily for the livewire energy of Vicky played by Ayushmann Khurana. The actor is so natural that it never seems he's acting but rather gliding through the role. He is a pro at both the comedy and emotional scenes. Given the right roles, Ayushmann has the potential to be the next big thing in Bollywood. Yaami Gautam is absolutely ravishing and captivates with her unending charm. The beauty also reflects in her performance. The supporting cast is blessed with quirky yet relatable characterizations. Annu Kapoor as the desperate doctor is brilliant and incites most laughs. Dolly Ahluwalia as the hyperactive Punjabi mother is superlative and such a pleasant change from the regular prototypes. Kamlesh Gill as the modern grandma who shares a drink with her daughter-in-law and aspires for iphones and LED TVs is another fabulous characterization and a fantabulous actor. Jayanta Das as the girl's Bengali father is as much amusing.
With its endless spirit and 'spunk', Vicky Donor brings to life an original, untold and entertaining story. Like sperm donors, there's always a shortage of good films in Bollywood. So do not miss this one!
Verdict: Very Good

The Coal Mafiaa – The Return of the Angry Young Man is the story of the rise of an ordinary young man against unjust mafias who have been terrorizing the people of Jharia, Dhanbad. S.P. Sinha (Mukesh Khanna), an honest, courageous and brave police official takes up the daunting job to place an end to the mafia rule. He battles tooth and nail with the corrupt officials and the mafias but in a hidden turn of event gets shot at the hands of the mafia. But Shiva (Ankit Nigotiya), a young and educated boy from Jharia, manages to save the police official’s life in time.
Shiva, whose father (Avtar Gill) had been handicapped as the outcome of a blast performed by the mafias numerous years ago, was already bitter against the mafias. After saving Sinha’s life, he chooses to unite with the police with the intention to put the coal mafias, Rajdev Singh and Zabbar Khan, behind bars. In this task of his, Shiva is also assisted by S.P.Rathore (Durjan Singh)

Story

‘Truth with triumph in the end’ is the motto of the local school in the part of town where Gattu resides. But Gattu is very poor to go to school and he’s not always that truthful also. Gattu lives and works extremely hard at a scrap yard belonging to a man he simply calls ‘uncle’. Uncle bought him years ago from his sick father. Gattu is particularly creative when it comes to thinking up excuses so he can slip out and indulge his zeal for kite-flying. Day after day the children love to compete against each other with their kites. They have given the name Kali to one mysterious black kite that dominates the sky; strangely, no one seems to know who owns it. If Gattu desires to win the next competition he’ll have to climb to the uppermost place in town. This is the school roof, of all places. Gattu manages to creep within where he assumes command of a small but determined group of pupils. A remarkable battle of the skies precedes during which Gattu uses every trick in the book to claim the lead. But his utmost achievement is when, encouraged by his friendship with his new-found comrades, he chooses to tell the reality.

CFSI's Gattu India’s official entry to Berlin Film Festival

In her third year as the chairperson of the Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI), actor-director Nandita Das has a reason to celebrate. The 80-minute Hindi feature, Gattu, directed by Rajan Khosa and produced by CFSI, is the only official entry from India at the Berlin Film Festival. The only other Indian film there will be Shah Rukh Khan’s Don 2 (2011).
Nandita, who waded through many boring and preachy scripts in an effort to revamp the 57-year-old CFSI, says she won’t be surprised if Gattu is picked up by an agent in Germany. “When a small film like this ventures beyond the usual geographical borders, it sparks off interest within too,” she reasons, pointing out that CFSI needs all the support it can get because unlike China, Netherlands and Denmark, India doesn’t focus on children’s cinema.
With Shemaroo, she has repackaged 10 CFSI films and is in talks with bookstores like Landmark to stock them. “For lack of choice and since we are one-TV households, our kids grow up either watching movies about violence and vengeance or soaps and reality shows. I’ve been struggling to ensure that films like Gattu not only get made, but also don’t end up in the cans,” says Nandita, who has been involved with the film throughout. “It was my first experience as a producer in a country where economics often comes in the way of art. Had Guttu been a big banner production, the news would have been all over by now.”
The film revolves around Gattu, a street urchin, who dreams of defeating Kali, a black kite in the sky. Nandita grew up flying kites with her cousins and Aamir Khan in Deepa Mehta’s 1947: Earth (1998). “We have festivals like Sankranti and Uttarayan, but today, it’s rare to see a kite in the sky,” she sighs pointing out that gadgets and social networking sites have taken children away from outdoor sports. “I’d want my son Rehaan to fly a kite.”
After working closely on Gattu, her dream of directing a children’s film has been rekindled. “Maybe one day, soon,” she smiles, adding that she’s also been reading scripts. “I’ve always been selective. Now it’ll have to be a special project for me to sacrifice my time with Rehaan, who’s a year-and-a-half. But some look interesting, by mid-year I should be back to acting.”

Film Review: Life Ki Toh Lag Gayi

Life Ki Toh Lag Gayi is what you call a wannabe film. It tries to defy the routine - the story is not conventional, storytelling has multiple unconnected tracks, the characters are quirky and the title has a calculated shock value. Why it still disappoints is that it never achieves what it aspires to.
So the plot is not just unconventional but also uninteresting. The multiple tracks do not add diverse perspectives but contribute towards common mess. The quirkiness in the characters is more irritating than amusing. And the title, well what's in a name!
The son of an underworld don (Kay Kay Menon) seeks revenge for the assassination of his parents. An honest Haryana cop (Manu Rishi) is struggling to unearth a narcotics nexus in the unfamiliar Mumbai milieu, where he is recently transferred. A small-town girl (Neha Bhasin) comes to Mumbai with dreams of being an actress but ends up conning men with her oomph to make a living. A foreign-return Bengali babu (Ranvir Shorey) is heartbroken when his girlfriend marries someone else and has almost turned into a Devdas. And his doped rockstar friend (Pradhuman Singh) keeps suggesting him different modes of suicide.
Neither do any of the individual subplots have any appeal nor does the film work as a whole. While Neha Bhasin's track is cliched to the core, Kay Kay Menon's track is morose and monotonous. But the most irritating episode is of Pradhuman Singh. As the unkempt rock-obsessed junkie who gyrates in his hairy topless avatar, he is so repulsive and annoying that you don't blame Ranvir Shorey of contemplating suicide. Manu Rishi is the only person who seems interested and tries his best to infuse life in an otherwise dead plot.
The multiple tracks aren't episodic but run parallel to each other. However each subplot cuts into the other so randomly and repeatedly that you lose track of the preceding chapter. The individual tracks do not intersect each other until the climax, and even there the interconnections do not fascinate but are purely functional. Thereby the film seems like a disjointed narrative as a whole.
Debutant Rakesh Mehta's writing is patchy and uninspiring and direction lacks the impact. The film tries too hard to be funny but falls flat at most instances. Most protagonists in the plot are underdeveloped and the conflicts of some (Pradhuman Singh, Ranvir Shorey) are so petty that you hardly feel for them.
Despite a usually-dependable cast, the performances are lackluster. Kay Kay Menon seems uninterested throughout. Ranvir Shorey doesn't impress. Pradhuman Singh (last seen as the Osama lookalike in Tere Bin Laden) is aggravating. Singer-turned-actress Neha Bhasin is plain average. Jackie Shroff is pathetically wasted in a cameo. Manu Rishi is the only one who holds his own and grabs your attention in a couple of scenes in the film.
Life Ki Toh Lag Gayi is what you will say if you watch the film!

Bittoo Boss's producer is happy with censor board

Producer Kumar Mangat has won a long-running battle with the censor board with his film Bittoo Boss managing to garner a Parental Guidance (PG) rating, albeit with cuts.

This is a first in the history of censorship in Indian cinema and a welcome change at that.

"We are very happy with the new profile of the censor board and the new members who have come in. It is very essential to bring in changes in the censor panel. And including a cinema person such as film critic Rajeev Masand in the advisory committee is a very wise decision," said Kumar Mangat.

According to a source, "Parental Guidance can only be recommended in India since we don't have it here. For the first time, an announcement on behalf of the censor board will be carried on hoardings saying for Bittoo Boss, it is recommended that children under 15 be accompanied by a parent." The censor board has even instructed the filmmakers about the size of the letters to be used for the announcement.

Although, the censor board has requested that some objectionable dialogues be deleted before granting the rating, Mangat is happy to oblige. "I was pleased to make the changes that the censor board recommended and accept the PG certification instead of the Adults Only certification. The film has an important message for youth," the producer said.

Salman Khan at Bittoo Boss' music launch

The flavour of a Punjabi wedding came alive at the music launch of Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Wide Frame Pictures co-production Bittoo Boss on Friday afternoon.

Not only was the media welcomed with lassi and saafas to wear on their heads, there was Punjabi food and bhangra as well! And on top of that, there was Salman Khan, cracking jokes with the cast and crew, just like he can! He told newcomer Pulkit Samrat, "Bittoo aaj na tu meri lega, na main teri loonga, aaj yeh log hamari lenge...photos," he said, pointing at the shutterbugs, while everyone laughed. And when he heard the title track Bittoo Sabki Lega, he told Raghav Sachar, "Give me a song like that too. Aise gaane mujhpe achhe lagte hain!" Also present at the do were producers Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak, director Supavitra Babul among others. The film will release on April 13.

Bittoo Boss - Movie Review - Pulkit Samrat, Amrita Pathak

Don't be conned by the title, tagline or the theme track into assuming Bittoo Boss to be a cool, cocky or contemporary cinema. Alas the pun in the trailer doesn't transcend into fun in the film. Bittoo Boss is not bad but boring cinema.
Bittoo (Pulkit Samrat) is your archetypal small-town boy with big dreams. He works as the local videographer of the town and aspires to shoot films someday. But when things don't go his way, he is lured into the business of blue films. Setting up spy cameras in honeymoon lodges, he attempts to shoot porn films on unassuming couples. But being the exemplary hero, his conscience awakens just at the right time.
The first few scenes might give a Band Baajaa Baaraat kinda impression with the hero meeting the heroine (Amita Pathak) in a marriage setting and subsequently pursuing her endlessly. But thereafter Bittoo Boss doesn't bear any resemblance with the story or spark of BBB. Rather there is no palpable chemistry between the lead couple and even their romance track comes across as corny. Picture this scene where Bittoo tells his babe that he slyly shot some footage of her while she was changing clothes and instead of being angry, she turns coy.
The narrative is more or less flat in the first half and one really hopes the graph to go better in the second half, with the central idea of hidden-camera abuse coming into picture. This is where the otherwise dull film could have scored some brownie points if it was supported by an eventful screenplay. Sadly beyond the two sporadic spy-camera episodes, the film doesn't have anything exciting to offer. While the first episode could have been wittier, the second just doesn't pass muster.
Further it's essential for the lead pair to part ways so that, just when the heroine is about to be married to someone else in the climax, the hero's father can command his son 'Jaa meri bahu ko leke aa...' (Go get my daughter-in-law). And guess what - Bittoo wins his babe in the end by busting a blue film racket.
Neither the writing nor the direction by debutant Supavitra Babul manages to strike a chord with the viewer. The film tries too hard to be funny but gets its basic comic timing wrong. At times you feel even the background score isn't complementing the scene.
Pulkit Samrat seems to have a strong Ranbir Kapoor hangover. The hero shows potential which sadly remains untapped in a mediocre script. Amita Pathak is better as compared to her past films but that's not saying much. She goes almost missing in the second half only to return in the climax. The actor playing a cabbie-turned-sidekick irritates.
Bittoo Boss neither boasts of the drama of Bigg Boss (from where it derives its title and theme) nor the entertainment value of Band Baajaa Baaraat (from where it derives its basic backdrop).
