Vampires, supernatural undead or living beings (folkloric) who consume the blood or flesh of the living creatures. Have been identified in every culture for many centuries around the world which attribute to demons or spirits or devil.

Ancient Age:

Africa: Iron-toothed and tree-dwelling vampires hunt children and summon thunder and lightning.

England: Families disinterring loved ones and removing their hearts believe that the deceased was a vampire who was responsible for death in the family.

South Asia: Vampires with a head encircled by intestines and a skull wander around dead bodies at night and attack the living ones.

India: Vetala are considered vampires which inhabit corpses and charnel grounds .

Japan: Vampires detach head and neck from its body to fly and search human prey at night.

Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia: Female vampire like beings detach parts of their upper body. Also, remain attractive girl by day and develop huge wings and long tongue in the night to prey on sleeping pregnant women to suck fetuses.

Destroying methods for suspected vampires varied, with staking the most cited method. Usually head buried between the feet, behind the buttocks or away from the body with iron needles into a corpse's heart and steel bits in the mouth, eyes, ears and between the fingers at the time of burial. Pouring boiling water over grave or sprinkling holy water on the body was performed.

Belief in Recent Years:

Vampire hunting societies still exist. Vampires attack swept through African during 2003. In England, rumours spread when an attacker had bitten people but police stated there was no such crime related to Vampires. In Mexico, a vampires were reported that fed upon the domesticated animals. Vampire superstition and mass hysteria is still in Europe and claims of vampires attack occur frequently.

Scientific Reasons for Vampires Existence:

Everything ranging from premature burial to the early of the body's decomposition cycle after death has been cited as cause for vampires which include ancestor worship, household spirits, and beliefs about the soul after death.

Ignorance is the cause for the belief in vampires. After death, the skin and gums lose fluids and contract, exposing roots of hair, nail, and teeth which produce the illusion that they have grown. When nails fall off and the skin peels away, underneath area were mistaken as new nails and skin. In premature burial, noise is heard because of gases from decomposition of bodies.
Tuberculosis, Porphyria, Rabies and bubonic plague were correlated with vampires where blood disorder and malfunction of brain occurs.Wolves and bats, are associated with vampires.

Scientific vampire novels, I Am Legend used as the basis for the films The Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man and I Am Legend. In 21st century J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series, The Vampire Huntress Legend Series, Vampire Hunter series, The Hollows series, Twilight series, Vampire Academy series. Some deviate from traditional vampires. Dracula is a major character in more movies.

Popular television series included Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Buffy the Vampire Slayer The Hunger,  The Vampire Chronicles,Blood Ties, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, Twilight Saga. Video games about vampires include Castlevania, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion  Fallout 3. In the 21st century, vampires remain popular with books, films, video games, and television shows. Although many reported that vampires did not exist, superstitious belief continues.

Most admired characters of vampires revolve around “The Vampire “(1748),”The Vampyre” (1819),  “Dracula” 1897, “ Carmilla” (1871). Immortality features in vampire film and literature which involves eternal life, need for blood of former equals.

Vampires are symbolic of several emotions such as love, guilt, and hate. So, desire is replaced by fear, love is replaced by sadism, and loved one is replaced by an unknown entity. The sexual aspect may or may not be present but innate sexuality of bloodsucking can be seen in connection with cannibalism. Serial killers were called vampires who drank the blood.

Considered more active at night but were not vulnerable to sunlight. Apotropaics items and mirrors that ward off vampires are common in folklore. Garlic wild rose and hawthorn plant are said to harm vampires. Also, sacred items, crucifix, rosary, or holy water can protect from vampires. It is believed that vampires are unable to walk on consecrated ground of churches or temples.

Cultures such as the Mesopotamians, Hebrews, Ancient Greeks, and Romans had tales of demons which are related precursors to modern vampires.
