Lower Back Pain

Lower Back Pain:

Low back pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder affecting 80% of people at some point in their lives. In the United States it is the most common cause of job-related disability, a leading contributor to missed work, and the second most common neurological ailment only headache is more common. It can be either acute, subacute or chronic in duration. With conservative measures, the symptoms of low back pain typically show significant improvement within a few weeks from onset.

Causes of Lower Back Pain:

Lower back pain occurs because of the inflammation of lower back muscles is false. The cause of lower back pain is actually the irritation of the nerve root near the spine. This nerve, which emerges through the openings between the vertebras, gets pinched and inflamed, giving rise to this condition.

The most common cause of low back pain is overstretched or injured muscles that support the lower back. Muscles and connective tissues can become hurt from lifting or carrying heavy objects incorrectly. Muscles in the back can also become weak from a lack of exercise. Exercises to make the muscles in the back and abdomen strong can lessen pain. Low back pain can also be caused by:

* Bad posture
* Standing or sitting in the same place for a long time
* "Slipped" disk; a "slipped" disk is when a disk between vertebrae bulges past the bones and presses against a nerve.
* Being very overweight
* Osteoporosis (thinning of bone)
* Osteoarthritis, which is the break down of tissues or bones of the joint
* Fibromyalgia, which is an illness that causes achy, tender muscles; the person with fibromyalgia may also sleep poorly, have headaches, and often feel tired
* Serious illnesses such as cancer, infection, or another illness can cause low back pain, but this is rare

Lower Back Pain Relief Exercise:

Exercise may be the most effective way to provide relief from lower back pain, speed recovery, and help strengthen back and abdominal muscles. Maintaining and building muscle strength is particularly important for people with skeletal irregularities. Doctors and physical therapists can provide a list of gentle exercises that help keep muscles moving and speed the recovery process. A routine of back-healthy activities may include:

* Stretching exercises
* Swimming
* Walking
* Yoga, which gently stretches muscles and eases pain
* Movement therapy to improve coordination and develop proper posture and muscle balance.

Any mild discomfort felt at the start of these exercises should disappear as muscles become stronger. However, if pain is more than mild and lasts more than 15 minutes during exercise, you should stop exercising and contact your doctor.

Surgery for Lower Back Pain:

When other therapies prove unsuccessful, surgery may provide lower back pain relief caused by back problems or serious musculoskeletal injuries. While some surgical procedures may be performed in a doctor's office under local anesthesia, others require hospitalization. It may be months following surgery before the person is fully healed, and people may suffer permanent loss of flexibility. Since invasive back surgery is not always successful, it is generally only performed in people with progressive neurologic disease or damage to the peripheral nerves.

Left Side Lower Back Pain:

Left Side lower back pain is a frequent culprit of pain and is responsible for many visits to an orthopedic doctor. Pain that develops in the left lower back is most often due to relatively common, simple conditions. However, it is important to understand the causes and symptoms of back pain in order to prevent more serious conditions from occurring.

Also, when exercising it is important not to over do it. Ease into a routine and always stretch the muscles out first. Right Side Lower Back Pain:

Right side lower back pain is among the most common types of back pain. Right side lower back pain is among the highest causes of missed work days among adults. The problem is obviously significant and can cause great discomfort when moving and trying to do normal, everyday activities.

Prevention is also important to minimize pain or potential recurring right side lower back pain. As already mention exercise is important and it will keep muscles strong and flexible.
